The practice has a Health Visitor and a Community Staff Nurse in the Health Visiting Team. Health Visitors are Registered General Nurses who have also completed the Diploma in Health Visiting. They may also be trained in other nursing specialities such as paediatrics, midwifery, psychiatric nursing, public health nursing etc.
The main function of the Health Visitor is promoting public health. The focus of their work is with young families but they are available for other age groups. The Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and Midwife who works with families with pre-school children. She works closely with the Health Visitor and Primary Health Care Team, giving families support and information on many aspects of childcare.
Harriet and Fiona work closely with other members of the Primary Health Care team, i.e. doctors, district nurses, midwives etc. When appropriate they also refer to other agencies, e.g. the Social Work Department, occupational therapy, speech therapy, home care etc. They run our paediatric surveillance programme and take part in immunisation programmes.
They are also involved in antenatal classes, supporting parenting and health promotion in the community. Our Health Visitor and Community Staff Nurse work at the surgery, in the home and in the community. They are available daily Monday – Friday, telephone 0131 447 9025 (answering machine).
